Amsterdam - The Canal Ring

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. With over 700,000 inhabitants, it is also the country’s most populated city. What started out as a small fishing village in the 12th century, later developed to become one of the world’s key trading ports, specializing in finance and diamonds. Today, Amsterdam is still recognized as one of the top financial centers in Europe. This commercial capital is home to the headquarters of seven of the world’s 500 largest companies, as well as numerous large Dutch institutions.

Amsterdam is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands. The city has plenty of rich architectural history to offer. It also boasts an extensive network of 17th century canals, which provide a scenic backdrop for visitors to explore. Additionally, the 19th century Defense Line of Amsterdam has a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Consecrated in 1306, the Oude Kerk (Old Church) is the oldest building in Amsterdam. Visitors to the city can view many examples of gothic, renaissance and baroque-style structures.

The Museum Square is home to the city’s most important galleries. The largest collection of classical Dutch art can be found at the RijksmuseumStedelijk Museum includes an important modern art collection, whilst the Van Gogh Museum holds some of the most famous paintings created by the Dutch master.

The oceanic climate of Amsterdam predominantly offers mild temperatures throughout the year. The city of diamonds and tulips is one of the top tourist destinations in Europe, receiving more than 5 million international visitors, and 16 million day-trippers annually. If you happen to be in Amsterdam in the spring, make sure check out the world’s only floating flower market at the Bloemenmarkt. The world famous tulip field is also a sight not to miss, located between Haarlem and Leiden, just a 20-minute drive away. These are just a few examples of the sights one can enjoy in this stunning, vibrant city.

Flying to Amsterdam

Landing permits are not required for any operations into the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (also known as IATA: AMS and ICAO: EHAM), is the primary (and only) international airport for GA operators visiting Amsterdam. Schiphol is located approximately 9km southwest of Amsterdam, in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer.

EHAM is the home base and European hub for multiple regional and international airlines. The airport has a single main terminal, which is split into three departure halls. This is used mainly for commercial passengers. A dedicated General Aviation (GA) terminal, known as the KLM Jet Center was also opened on the east side in 2011. Schiphol is the fifth busiest airport in Europe in terms of passengers served.

It is mandatory for all aircraft operating to EHAM to be PRNAV approved. The airport is not open 24-hours for GA. Daily arrivals are allowed only between 06:20 and 21:50 UTC, while daily departures are permitted only from 06:00 to 21:35 UTC. Extensions to these restrictions are not possible.

Since GA operating timings are limited, airport slot booking will be necessary. Handling is compulsory, and EHAM is fully equipped with all ground handling services. Prior booking for aircraft parking is not required, and long-term parking is available. The GA terminal offers VIP lounges for both pax and crew, as well as helicopter transfers. Crew visas are not required in order to enter Amsterdam, if valid crew ID and general declaration is provided.

Beijing Capital International Airport (IATA: PEK, ICAO: ZBAA)

ZBAA is the main international airport serving Beijing, the capital city of China. According to Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) 2015 statistics, ZBAA was ranked number one busiest airport, based on total passenger traffic. The Beijing Capital International Airport caters to GA with Airport of Entry, plus customs and immigrations 24 hours a day. CAAC approves flight schedule and slots at the same time. There is no need to book short-term aircraft parking. However, long-term parking is only allowed for a maximum of 24 hours. ZBAA is fully equipped for ground handling services and offers premium VIP and crew lounge.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (IATA: PVG, ICAO: ZSPD)

ZSPD is one of two major international airports available in Shanghai. Pudong airport is a major aviation hub for the country and serves mainly international flights. ZSPD is the world’s third busiest airport in terms of cargo traffic. It is also considered the second busiest airport in China by total passenger traffic.

ZSPD caters to business aviation with 24 hour AOE and customs and immigration. CAAC approves flight schedules and slots both at once. Generally, no more than 48 hours is allowed for aircraft parking. However based on the situation, we can try to check with the airport to see if they can approve longer parking. Pudong Airport is fully equipped to provide ground handling services for all types of aircraft. Clients can also enjoy the availability of a VIP and crew lounge.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (IATA: CAN, ICAO: ZGGG)

ZGGG is a major international airport for Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong province. According to CAAC, Guangzhou airport was ranked China’s third busiest airport in 2015 by passenger traffic, cargo traffic, and aircraft movements. ZGGG is open for private operators. The airport is AOE with customs and immigration available 24 hours a day. CAAC approves slots and flight schedules at the same time. Based on the flight schedule, long term parking may be possible if we check with airport first. ZGGG is fully equipped for ground handling services, and pax and crew can also make use of their VIP lounge.

Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (IATA: SZX, ICAO: ZGSZ)

Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport is located in Shenzhen city, Guangdong province. The airport is a major hub for both commercial and cargo airlines. In 2010, Shenzhen airport served over 26 million passengers. In 2015, it was ranked as the 5th busiest airport in China in terms of passenger movements, serving more than 39 million passengers. The airport is approximately 40 minutes away by drive from the city center.

ZGSZ caters to GA with AOE 24 hours a day. Customs and immigration is also operational for 24 hours. However, we need to check with immigration when the flight is operating after midnight. Slots will be approved along with the flight Schedule by the CAAC. Prior booking of short term aircraft parking is not required. In the case of long-term parking, we need to check with the airport through the flight schedule. The airport is fully equipped for all ground handling services, as well as having a VIP and crew lounge.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (IATA: SHA, ICAO: ZSSS)

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, is the second of the two international airports in Shanghai, China. It was previously Shanghai’s primary airport, until Pudong airport was completed in 1999. ZSSS is located in Hongqiao town, 13 kilometers west of downtown. This is closer in proximity to the city center, in comparison to ZSPD.

Hongqiao airport accommodates mainly domestic flights and limited international flights. In 2015, the airport was ranked as China’s 6th busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic. Total passenger movements in 2015 were over 39 million. ZSSS also caters to Business Aviation. However, AOE and customs and immigration is not operational 24 hours a day. Flights to and from eastward or northeastward are not allowed to operate daily during curfew times 16:00 to 22:00 UTC.

Airport slots and flight schedules are approved by the CAAC together. Due to ongoing airport reconstruction, business aircraft are not allowed to park for more than 2 nights. However the airport is fully equipped for all ground handling services, and offers VIP and crew lounges.

Landing Permits and Fuel

Please be advised that we can only apply for landing permits for the purpose of business/private flights. Each aircraft should contain less than 29 seats. A sponsor letter is no longer needed for obtaining a landing permit. The approximate lead time an operator can expect is 3 working days before the flight. Also note that since there is no VAT on fuel in China, Jetex can offer very competitive prices to our clients.

Restrictions

The following slot restrictions apply to all five airports mentioned above:

Due to slot congestion, a private jet is not authorized to occupy more than one slot during peak hours at the same airport, within the same day. Peak hours are referred to as from 00:01 to 14:00 UTC. Also, slots will not be granted to private flights at all from 23:00 to 01:00 UTC, daily.

Russian Unity Day

Russia celebrates Unity Day every 4th of November, to commemorate the rebellion to free Moscow from Polish occupation during 1612. Unity Day reminds people of the unified society who stood for the preservation of Russian statehood, despite the class differences and the absence of patriarchy and supreme leadership (Tsar). It was the turning point of the Polish-Muscovite War which lasted over a decade (1605-1918), and marked an end to the “times of troubles”.

Russian Unity Day is celebrated in many ways by its citizens. Some prefer to offer flowers to the monument of the national heroes who led the uprising, Minin, and Pozharsky. Many gather for rallies, concerts, and exhibitions in order recollect and honor their history. Various Politicians and religious figures use this day to address the need for unity amongst different ethnic and religious groups within the Russian Federation. A large portion of the population also uses this day as another substitute for a holiday that was once held on the 7th of November during the Soviet times.

In 2015, thousands of people gathered in the streets of Moscow to celebrate Unity Day while President Vladimir Putin presented his speech. Thousands also marched at different parts of Moscow waving national flags and chanting nationalist slogans.

November 4 is also known as Feast Day for the Russian Orthodox Church, for honoring their icon Our Lady of Kazan. On this day Russian Orthodox Christians participate by attending church services followed by a procession.

photo of the beautiful city of Santiago Chile

Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile. Located in the Chilean Central Valley, it was named after the biblical figure St. James during the colonial times. The city is shaped by the surrounding hills, mountains and vineyards, and split in the middle by the fast-flowing Mapocho River.

The climate of Santiago follows a Mediterranean weather pattern, with hot, dry summers and mild, moist winters. Between October and May there is hardly any rain, making it the best time to visit and experience everything the area has to offer. Just on the outskirts of the city and within a few hours’ drive, you can reach the mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Travelers can enjoy skiing in the Andes Mountains, or go surfing on the numerous beaches. Be sure to catch a breathtaking view of Santiago with the Andes Mountains in the background from Cerro San Cristobal (hill).

The city boasts an extensive array of 19th-century neoclassical architecture, and also some iconic structures from the Spanish colonial period. Spend the day exploring the numerous grand buildings and museums. At Santiago’s original center, Plaza de Armas, you can find a number of historic landmarks.

In addition to its historic aspects, Santiago is also modern city that is the cultural, political and financial center of Chile. With the establishment of many large corporations and major companies, the city has developed a thriving modern business center known as Sanhattan. Visitors can indulge in fine dining at a wide range of top national and international restaurants. Catch a view of the city in a 360-degree view at night from the Torre Costanera, currently the tallest structure in Latin America. The city’s nightlife also has a lot to offer, with many traditional dance and music clubs to explore. A must visit for Jazz fans is Santiago’s most famous venue, Club de Jazz.

A wide range of industry topics are expected to be covered, including manufacturing, maintenance, emerging technologies, management, civil-military integration and many more.

The most convenient option for attending the China Airshow is Zhuhai Jinwan Airport, also known as IATA: ZUH, ICAO: ZGSD. ZGSD can be used as an Airport of Entry (AOE) temporarily due to the China Airshow from the 20th October to 30th of November 2016. Although the airport is fully equipped for ground handling services, it does not contain any VIP lounge.

Our Jetex 24/7 dedicated operations team is on standby for new regulations from ZGSD with regards to Prior Permission Required (PPR) and any restrictions to customs and immigrations. As soon as we receive updates, we inform our clients accordingly.

Our FBO contains a VIP lounge, and expert multilingual staff who are ready to assist with all of your requirements. Official sponsor letters issued by Zhuhai Airshow organizer and full travel schedule are needed for acquiring ZGSD landing permits. For ZGGG, submission of additional documents is not necessary. The application is to be submitted to CAAC three working days before arrival date. As a result, we can expect to attain the permit within one working day prior to arrival date. Please be advised that we can apply for landing permits for the purpose of business and private flights only. This means that each aircraft should have a maximum of 28 seats. Finally, operators should also note that there is no VAT charged on fuel in China.

NOTAMs

NOTAMs suggest that slots are going to be congested at ZGGG, as well as at ZBAA / ZSPD / ZSSS / ZGGG / ZGSZ. Private jets are not authorized to occupy more than one slot during peak hours at the same airport within the same day. Peak hours are defined as 00:01 to 14:00 UTC. It is recommended that operators inform their trip support company of their intended travel dates as soon as possible, in order to make all arrangements on time for the event.

MELBOURNE CUP 2106

Next Tuesday November 1, the Melbourne Cup will take place at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. This 3,200 meter race is one of Australia’s most prestigious thoroughbred horse races. It is the richest “two-mile” handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races. Conducted annually by the Victoria Racing Club, the event will start at 3pm.

The first race was held in 1861 over two miles (3.219 km), however the course was shortened to 3,200 meters (1.988 mi) in 1972 when Australia adopted the metric system, reducing  the distance by 18.688 meters (61.312 ft). The current record holder is Kingston Rule, who won 1990 race with a time of 3:16.3.

The Melbourne Cup is a “quality handicap” for horses 3 years old and over. In handicap contests, the weight of the jockey and riding gear is adjusted with ballast to meet a nominated figure. Older horses will carry more weight than younger ones, and weights are also adjusted according to the horse’s previous results. In the past, weights were calculated to give each horse an equal winning chance. However in recent years the rules have changed to a “quality handicap” formula, with superior horses given less severe weight penalties than under “pure handicap” rules.

The total prize money for last year’s race exceeded AUD$ 6,200,000, plus trophies valued at AUD$ 175,000. The first 10 past the post receive a share of the prize money, with the 2015 winner taking home a cool AUD$ 3.6 million.

The Race that Stops a Nation

The Melbourne Cup is known as “the race that stops a nation”, and with good reason as much of Australia grinds to a halt. At 3pm next Tuesday, there will be approximately two and a half million spectators watching on television. Race day is even designated as a public holiday for those working within metropolitan Melbourne and some parts of regional Victoria, illustrating the country’s ongoing fascination with the event. As with the Grand National in United Kingdom, it is the one time of year when even those with only a passing interest in horse racing will have a flutter.

The Melbourne Cup is also perhaps the biggest day on Australia’s social calendar. Flemington Racecourse is the place to be seen, and people love to dress up for the occasion. It was estimated that in the lead-up to last year’s race, Australians purchased around 75,000 hats and fascinators, 61,000 dresses, 59,000 pairs of shoes and 30,000 handbags. At the racetrack alone, spectators ate over 15,000 oysters, 75,000 pies and consumed over half a million drinks. There are a wide variety of luxurious food and beverage options for attendees to enjoy, as well as numerous fashion and entertainment events happening onsite throughout the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Orlando Airport NBAA BACE

The annual NBAA Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) is set to take place from November 1 – 3, 2016 in Orlando, Florida. The convention and exhibition will bring together over 27,000 industry professionals, including key decision makers, existing and potential aircraft owners and manufacturers.

NBAA-BACE is the sixth largest trade show in the United States, and the largest civil aviation trade show in the world. The three day long convention will feature over 1,100 indoor exhibitors and one of two static displays of aircraft at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC). The other main static display, as well as more than 50 education sessions, will be held outside at the Orlando Executive Airport. NBAA-BACE is an ideal platform for networking, showcasing your brand, and promoting business aviation related products and services to business aircraft buyers around the world.

For further details regarding NBAA-BACE 2016 and its program schedule please visit the NBAA website.

Primary Airports

The static display of aircraft will be held at the Orlando Executive Airport (IATA: ORL, ICAO: KORL). Indoor static displays and the main exhibitor hall will be located at the OCCC. The Orlando International Airport, also known as IATA: MCO and ICAO: KMCO is approximately 20 minutes drive from the convention center. Please note while KORL serves only General Aviation, KMCO has a high traffic volume due to serving commercial scheduled flights. Orlando International Airport is the second busiest airport in the state of Florida, serving over 40 million passengers so far in 2016.

Both airports are operational 24 hours-a-day and are fully-equipped for all ground handling services, as well as offering spacious lobbies and crew lounges. The static display at KORL is approximately 25 minutes drive and the Convention Center is about 20 minutes drive from the KMCO. Both airports are about 20 to 25 minutes away from Downtown Orlando, depending on traffic. Visiting operators are welcome to choose whichever airport they prefer to use.

Airport Slots, Aircraft Parking and Fuel uplift

Slots are not required for operating into either airport. There is plenty of ramp space available for aircraft parking at the Orlando Executive Airport. If you are planning on using KMCO, be sure to notify your trip planning provider as soon as possible in order to get guaranteed parking.

There is no VAT on fuel at these locations, meaning Jetex can offer very competitive prices to our clients. Operators are not expecting any delays on fuel uplifts during this event.

Jetex’s dedicated 24/7 operations team will look after all the details of you and your crew’s entry requirements, ensuring all flights into or within the United States go smoothly.
