Japan

The state of Japan is made up of 6,852 islands, from which only 430 are inhabited by approximately 127 million people. Japan’s capital city is Tokyo. The Greater Tokyo Area is the largest metropolitan area in the world, and home to more than 35 million residents. Japan has the third largest national economy in the world, in terms of nominal GDP.

Japan has a fascinatingly multifaceted culture, with combined influences from Asia, Europe, and North America. Although the country is deeply rooted in traditions that stretch back thousands of years, Japanese society is in a state of rapid flux with continuous changes in popular culture, fashion and technological development.

The country has nineteen UNESCO World Heritage sites to offer visitors. Discover the exquisite modern galleries, museums of traditional art and historical buildings. Explore the nation’s magnificent horticultural arts starting with the three great gardens, KenrokuenKorakuen, and Kairakuen. Japan also has a rich tradition of performing art that is still alive today. Watch the spring geisha dances in Kyoto and attend Awa Odori, the largest traditional dance festival in Japan. The blooming of the cherry blossom trees (or sakura) in spring is a major event in Japan’s calendar, and also the most popular time to visit the country.
