Earlier this week, Adel Mardini, Jetex Founder & CEO, shared his insights into the future of international fixed-base operators (FBO) and what services VIP terminals around the world will provide to the discerning private jet travelers.

Speaking at the Corporate Jet Investor London 2020 (CJI London), Mr. Mardini stressed the importance of creating a new model for VIP terminals that will ensure a seamless luxury travel experience.

Traditionally, FBOs mainly served their primary purpose of providing fuel and servicing to aircraft, like a pitstop, and a quick respite for the crew. Over the years, Jetex earned the reputation of being a positive disruptor within the FBO sector. The company created a new standard of luxury in travel – a special alchemy between the world’s most luxurious hotels, lifestyle brands and private aviation.

Jetex FBOs are a one-stop shop for luxury private jet terminals, ground support, trip planning and bespoke concierge services. Today, Jetex facilities around the world resemble modern luxury hotel lobbies with services designed to exceed expectations.

Over the next decade, the number of new private jets taking to the skies is expected to total 7,600 – costing buyers a combined US$248 billion. The increasing number of air travelers (compound annual growth rate of around 3%-4% in 2019-2023) calls for modernization and upgrades of airport infrastructure, increases demand for FBOs to streamline various operations such as aircraft maintenance, fueling, parking, and hangaring.

Mr. Mardini also highlighted the importance of FBOs knowing who their end customer is – similar to traditional airlines and luxury brands. Modern sophisticated customer relationship management systems are key to these insights to ensure that FBO facilities are designed to meet and exceed customer expectations, as well as generate new revenue streams to the operator.

As Jetex expands its global footprint, it is committed to bringing the suite of signature Jetex services to all the new destinations.

Slots are required in EGGW and parking is on a first come, first served basis. If the flight is not declared as “private” and has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 10 tons and above, all passengers, crew and luggage will need to undergo security screening.

A separate General Aviation Report (GAR) will be required for both arrival and departure.

If any non-EU passengers are arriving, a Remote Clearance Form must be completed and delivered to handler a minimum of six hours prior to the aircraft’s arrival. Jetex will fill both GAR forms and Remote Clearance Forms for your flight as needed.

Handling is mandatory in EGKB, EGTK, EGLF, EGLC and EGGW. Jetex provides ground handling to any aircraft in all these airports through our handling partners.

European Economic Area (EEA) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) air carriers are currently allowed to undertake services to and from the UK without a permit, provided their flights originate from or are bound to territories within the European Common Aviation Area. EEA carriers can also undertake services within UK (cabotage flights) without a permit.

NOTE: The United Kingdom has officially exited the EU on January 31, 2020 and is no longer an EU Member. A transition period is effective until December 31, 2020. During this period, landing permit regulations might change. If your flight requires a landing permit, Jetex can arrange it on your behalf.

The 92nd Academy Awards will honor the most outstanding films of 2019.

The brightest stars and the biggest names in film making are coming together at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California for one of the most important red-carpet events in the film industry: the 92nd Academy Awards.

Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards ceremony will honor the most notable and critically acclaimed films of 2019 on February 9, 2020. If you’re planning to fly into Los Angeles for the event, here’s what you need to know for a smooth and easy operation

1. AIRPORT OPTIONS

Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR, KBUR) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY, KVNY) are the closest airport options to the Dolby Theatre, which is located within the Hollywood and Highland Center shopping mall.

Both KBUR and KVNY are about 15 to 20 minutes away from Dolby Theatre by car in good traffic conditions.

San Bernardino International Airport (SBD, KSBD) is another alternate airport if you’re operating to LA. KSBD is about an hour and 30-minute drive to/from the Dolby Theatre.

Jetex has a facility within KSBD, allowing us to provide fast and efficient flight support services to any aircraft.

No limitations or restrictions apply to private flights. Slots and PPR are not required to operate to KBUR, KVNY and KSBD.

2. FUEL

Private aviation traffic may increase during special events. Placing fuel requests in advance is recommended to avoid delays on fuel delivery. To get a fuel quotation, please contact fuelpricing@jetex.com

At KSBD, Jetex’s facility is the first in California to offer self-serve fueling technology, resulting in quick turnarounds.

3. GROUND HANDLING

Ground handling is mandatory in KBUR, KVNY and KSBD. Jetex can provide direct ground handling to any aircraft in KSBD, while we can meet ground handling requirements in KBUR and KVNY through our local handling partners.

4. GROUND TRANSPORTATION

Available ground transportation generally comprises airport shuttles, transfer and authorized taxis. For luxury cars, vans and other VIP transport from KBUR, KVNY or KSBD to Dolby Theatre or to your preferred hotel, get in touch with Jetex.

5. PERMITS

A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Waiver is required for non-US-registered aircraft that does not meet certain requirements. For aircraft registered from China, Cuba, North Korea, Russia and Sudan, a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Route Authorization Approval is also mandatory.

In addition to the above requirements, aircraft entering the US must have their valid Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Decals, as well as a pre-arranged inbound/outbound Electronic Advance Passenger Information System (eAPIS) if operating to/from international airport.

6. VISA

Non-US citizens and/or non-US permanent residents operating to US need valid US visas prior to arrival. The visa needs to be arranged before arrival in the US.

7. SECURITY

Security is expected to be tightened within and around Dolby Theatre due to the high-profile event. On the other hand, KBUR, KVNY and KSBD airports already implement standard security protocols and are therefore well-secured.

8. HOTELS

A wide selection of two-star to five-star hotels surrounds Dolby Theatre. Some of the most popular options include Four Season Hotels Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, The Ritz-Carlton, The Peninsula, Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills and W Hollywood.

Jetex can easily make arrangements for you at any hotel that suits your needs. Please contact us at travel@jetex.com.

Colosseum-Rome-Italy

Rome – the capital city of Italy – is served by two airports: Ciampino Airport and Leonardo da Vinci Airport.

Italy ranks as the third most visited country in Europe, following France and Spain. Although Italy’s overall economic growth is expected to stagnate in the coming years, its thriving tourism industry is poised to skyrocket further.

According to the latest study by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, more than 62 million tourists headed to Italy in 2018 – a figure forecast to increase every year.

If you’re planning to operate to Italy anytime soon, our aviation guideline here can help you better navigate Italy’s busy skies and avoid any inconveniences and delays.

1. MAIN AIRPORTS

Italy has a total of 77 airports, making it especially accessible by air travel. Rome – the capital city – is served by two airports: Leonardo da Vinci Airport and Ciampino Airport.

Ciampino–G.B. Pastine International Airport [CIA, LIRA]

Ciampino Airport is the secondary international airport serving Rome and is an important entry airport for general aviation (executive and charter flights). Ciampino Airport is about 25 minutes away from Rome by car without traffic.

LIRA is home to a dedicated General Aviation Terminal. Jetex Italy is stationed in LIRA, providing complete ground support and can arrange services across all main airports in the country.

Leonardo da Vinci Airport [FCO, LIRF]

Leonardo da Vinci Airport is the largest airport in Rome, catering to international and domestic flights. It is also one of the busiest airports in Europe, with around 43 million passengers annually.

Located in the town of Fiumicino, Leonardo da Vinci Airport is also known as Rome Fiumicino Airport and is around 30 minutes away by car (without traffic) from Rome’s downtown area.

Other Main Airports in Italy:

  • Pisa International Airport (PSA, LIRP) – South Pisa
  • Milan Malpensa International Airport (MXP, LIMC) – Milan
  • Milan Linate Airport (LIN, LIML) – Milan
  • Florence Airport, Peretola (FLR, LIRQ) – Florence (Formally known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport)
  • Orio al Serio International Airport (BGY, LIME) – Bergamo (Also known as Milan Bergamo Airport)
  • Venice Airport Marco Polo (VCE, LIPZ) – Venice
  • Catania–Fontanarossa Airport (CTA, LICC) – Catania (Also known as Vincenzo Bellini Airport)
  • Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ, LIPE) – Bologna
  • Naples International Airport (NAP, LIRN) – Naples
  • Falcone Borsellino Airport (PMO, LICJ) – Palermo (Also simply known as Palermo Airport)

Parking and Slots

All private and commercial flights that operate aircraft with less than 19 seats can obtain a PPR (to be put in item 18 of the flight plan) to have their parking confirmed.

All commercial aircraft with more than 19 seats need slots to operate in any airfield. Slots can be applied directly by the operator or through Jetex Italy with a power of attorney from the operator. Assoclearance is the entity that manages slots in Italy.

NOTE: This guide provides general information on Italy’s airports. However, some airports may have different guidelines. Get in touch with Jetex Italy if you have inquiries.

2. GROUND HANDLING

Handling is mandatory in all civil airports in Italy. In LIRA, Jetex provides direct ground handling to any aircraft, whereas ground handling support across all of Italy’s airports is available through our nationwide network of partners.

3. FUEL

Every airport has available fuel at all times, but Avgas is not available in LIRA. In Rome, fuel carnets are accepted by certain providers. Jetex fuel releases are accepted and cash payment can be made but not encouraged.

Sending a request for fuel release prior to arrival is highly recommended to prevent delays on fuel delivery.

4. GROUND TRANSPORTATION

Ground transportation in Italy’s airports generally includes airport shuttles, transfers and authorized taxis. Jetex Italy can arrange luxury cars, vans, and big buses for both crew and passengers in LIRA and across the country.

5. PERMITS

Italian Charter Landing Permit Requirements

All charter (non-scheduled commercial) flights by non-EU-registered aircraft require landing permits. For any aircraft with up to 19 passenger seats, these operations are referred to as “air taxi flights,” and only annual charter permits are available. An annual charter permit covers an operator’s entire fleet, assuming all aircraft have been specified on the permit. Once approved, an Italian charter permit is valid for 12 months.

Air taxi is defined as “a flight that involves transport of passengers, with their own freight (baggage), under a single charter contract for the entire capacity of an aircraft having no more than 19 passenger seats.”

Exemptions for EU-registered aircraft

EU-registered charter aircraft with 19 passenger seats or less do not require landing permits. L’Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile (ENAC, or Italian Civil Aviation Authority) does not require any special permit or notification, but operators should submit a ground handling request and file a flight plan.

Lead Time for Processing Landing Permits

Processing an annual Italian charter landing permit takes 20 business days, provided that the operator has landed within the EU as a charter in the last two International Air Transport Association seasons (March to October and October to March). Otherwise, processing will take 45 business days.

Processing Hours

ENAC processes charter permits from Mondays through Fridays, 9:00-17:00 local time. The office is closed on weekends and holidays. Please note that after-hours permit processing is not possible under any circumstances, and after-hours contact numbers are not available.

Requirements for non-EU-registered aircraft

Operators applying for a charter permit to Italy for the first time – or those who have not operated to Italy during the past two IATA seasons – need to submit specific documents to the Italian Air Transport Development Division:

  • Air Operator Certificate complete with operational specifications.
  • Foreign Operator Questionnaire, validated by the aeronautical authorities, of the applicant is always required for air carriers performing flights with aircraft that have more than 19 passenger seats.
  • Certificate of Registration and Airworthiness, along with a noise certificate and ACASII EGPWS equipment certification.
  • Valid liability insurance issued according to EU Regulation 785/2004 and in compliance with ENAC’s standard form insurance requirements.
  • Letter of approval from the civil authority in which the aircraft is registered, certifying that the company’s security program complies with International Civil Aviation Organization Annex 17, and it must be signed by the Transportation Security Administration inspector who supervised the issuing document.
  • Power of attorney (POA) authorizing the ground handler to obtain the permit on the operator’s behalf. This POA must be on the company’s letterhead and notarized (must include a stamp and signature).

Domestic Operations

Charter landing permits specify which Airports of Entry (AOEs) you may travel to within Italy. To travel to a domestic airport, an aircraft must first arrive or depart through an Italian AOE.

Note: For domestic travel in Italy, carrying passengers not associated with a flight’s international legs is considered cabotage. Boarding any additional passenger(s) that you did not bring into Italy is strictly not allowed.

Overflight Permits and Regulations

To secure overflight permits or to notify your intent to fly over Italian territory, communication must be made to overflights@enac.gov.it using the application form provided by ENAC and available in the section reserved to standard forms.

Carriers who need advance authorization and are applying for the first time to perform a stop for non-traffic purposes must provide the following documents:

  • Copy of AOC
  • Copy of Insurance Certificate, to be kept in force during the period covering requested operations, issued according to the attached form and pursuant to EC Regulation 785/04 on minimum insurance requirements for carriers operating within the EC territory

Carriers who do not need advance authorization and are applying for the first time to make a stop for non-traffic purposes must forward a copy of their AOC, and in case of landing, a copy of a valid insurance certificate.

For more information on Overflight Permits in Italy for non-EU carriers, please refer to this link.

6. CUSTOMS AND VISAS

Obtaining visa on arrival in any Italian entry location is not possible. Nationalities who require a visa must arrive in Italy with a valid visa. To know if you will need a visa to Italy, refer to this link.

Customs in LIRA are available at all times at the General Aviation Terminal. Customs in other Italian airports are mostly available 24/7; however, in case of special hours, Jetex Italy can arrange Customs to be present at the arrival and/or departure times of our clients.

7. HOTEL

As one of Europe’s premier tourist destinations, Italy offers an extensive variety of luxury hotels and accommodations. Jetex can make any arrangement for your hotel of preference anywhere in Italy.

8. SECURITY

Italy is a politically stable country. Public transportation is always patrolled by law forces. Aside from petty crimes like pickpockets in the big cities, Italy is a safe country. In case of emergencies, visitors can dial 112, free of charge and available 24/7.

The teams at the airside might not have the time to write out an email or some may not want to openly report, due to having their name all over it.

Every employee gets a good feeling when their company gives them opportunities to participate directly in decisions or make suggestions they know will be considered. Sometimes this even gets them motivated to work even harder for the company, even a sense of pride when their suggestions / notes help drive a change. But it could also be the other direction, when suggestions repeatedly get ignored or rarely receive feedback on what they spoke/wrote out. This could result in staff losing motivation and at times become resentful.

I feel that with this day and age of social progress, we have plenty of tools to help our staff report issues or celebrate success. WhatsApp being one of them!

Staff supervisors create groups with all team members and use the platform to update maintenance, show situations on the field and sometimes even send memos. The benefits of using WhatsApp, everyone has a smart phone (sometimes even company provided), the double tick (read receipts – this also helps as a verification that the message was seen but a confirmation acknowledgement would be better to follow since some would just scroll over), the ease of use, the access of camera for photo evidence if need be, etc.

Besides WhatsApp, there is the good ol’ anonymous feedback box! I have seen a lot of staff use this method since it secures some element of anonymity, but some have even gone as far to use their other hand to write it out or a printout from computer. In one of my previous workplaces, they usually used napkins but that went away after some tool box sessions.

Another great way to have the teams report would be the old school audit form. Now this way may seem a little bit daunting for some, with the whole stigma of an auditor with a clipboard behind a wall taking notes, but a few golden rules and a nicely laid out form can do wonders. The first thing to go would be the name! When you haven’t got the name of the person you are auditing you would just be recording the task or suggestion.

Appointing a spokesperson to do the talking would also be a great way to report things. If this path is taken, you may consider having a rotation of the spokespersons to spread out the privilege!

Having an iPad positioned on a stand or in the operations break room to let the team report as they want could also be a great method, but again, communicating the steps that happened once they report and the anonymity is important.

The anonymous factor is not only important but for most it lets them dish it out without any consequences of reprimands. Of course, with recognition of positive reportings they might choose to include their names.

Whatever method you choose to report, the important thing is to acknowledge, give feedback, and the share expectations of what will come from what has been reported. Without that clarity, the ol’ mailbox may just be gathering dust.

Inside the Rod Laver Arena, the main venue for the Australian Open.

The Australian Open 2020 will see the world’s greatest professional tennis players battle it out at Melbourne Park to find out who will emerge victorious and claim the title Australian Grand Slam Champion. With astounding prizes and global prestige at stake, the annual tournament truly packs in the excitement and the crowd.

One of the biggest and most anticipated events in tennis, Australian Open 2020 will take place from January 20 to February 2. Traveling to Melbourne for the event? Here is what you need to know to effortlessly operate to Melbourne.

1. AIRPORT OPTIONS

Melbourne Airport [MEL, YMML]

Melbourne is primarily served by Melbourne Airport, the second busiest airport in Australia and the main international airport serving Melbourne’s metropolitan area.

Commonly known as Tullamarine Airport, Melbourne Airport is about 23 kilometers away from the city center and around 30 minutes away from Melbourne Park by car in good traffic conditions.

NOTE: Slots and PPR are not required for private flights operating to Melbourne Airport. There are also no parking restrictions.

Essendon Fields Airport [MEB, YMEN]

Essendon Fields Airport serves commercial, charter, general aviation and corporate jet flights. Situated next to the intersection of the Tullamarine and Calder Freeways, Essendon Airport is the nearest airport to the city center. Its operating hours are from 0600 to 2300 LT.

NOTE: Slot is not needed, but PPR can be arranged with handling. Maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) limit is 49999Kg for any aircraft operating to the airport. Securing approval from the National Passenger Processing Committee is required if total number of people on board is 10, including the crew. The approval takes up to 10 working days.

Avalon Airport [AVV, YMAV]

Avalon Airport is an international airport catering to both commercial and general aviation flights. Located in Avalon in the City of Greater Geelong in Victoria, Avalon Airport is approximately 30-40 minutes away from Melbourne Park by car.

Although located outside Melbourne’s metropolitan district, Avalon Airport is the second busiest airport out of the four airports serving Melbourne. Light aircraft may land and park at AVV if certain conditions are met. Avalon Airport features a single runway and a helipad.

NOTE: Avalon Airport is a slot coordinated airport. PPR is mandatory and parking restrictions apply for GA flights. In contrast with MEL, AVV is not regulated by the Commonwealth Airports Act.

2. FUEL

Send your fuel request before arrival to avoid delays on fuel delivery. To get a fuel quotation, please contact fuelpricing@jetex.com.

 3. GROUND HANDLING

Ground handling is mandatory in all airports. Jetex provides ground handling to any aircraft through our handling partners in Melbourne, Essendon and Avalon airports.

4. GROUND TRANSPORTATION

Available ground transportation generally comprises airport shuttles, transfer and authorized taxis. At Melbourne Airport, the Tullamarine Freeway provides convenient access to the airport. Tullamarine Freeway includes one offramp directly connected to the airport grounds, and another offramp for taxis, buses, airport staff and freight transport.

Another major link to Melbourne Airport is the M80 Western Ring Road, offering direct connection to Melrose Drive, which is 1.5 kilometers from the terminal area.

For luxury cars, vans and other VIP transport from Melbourne, Essendon or Avalon Airport to the city center or your preferred hotel, get in touch with Jetex.

5. PERMITS

All non-scheduled and commercial flights need landing permits to operate to Australia. Processing time may take around 5 working days from the date the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) receives your complete application, including all supporting documents.

NOTE: Operating large marginally compliant (MCC3) jet aircraft in Australia is subject to certain regulations. Non-scheduled operations by MCC3 aircraft are not allowed at Melbourne, Essendon and Avalon airports. The same restriction applies to airports in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, Darwin, Gold Coast and Newcastle (Williamtown).

Noise permission from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development is required so applications for non-scheduled flights to these ports can be assessed. The noise permission should go together with the landing application form. Jetex can arrange all the necessary permits for your flight.

6. CUSTOMS

Australia has strict regulations on items that travelers can and cannot bring when entering the country. To know if the item you are bringing is restricted, prohibited or needs to be declared, please refer to this guideline.

7. VISA

Except for Australian passport holders and New Zealand passport holders, who can get visa on arrival, all others need to have a visa to enter Australia. To determine the right visa for you and the necessary requirements, please refer to this link.

8. SECURITY

Australia is considered to be an extremely safe country with very low crime rates. In big cities such as Melbourne, normal precautionary measures are advised.

9. PEAK SEASON AND CLIMATE

December to February is Melbourne’s peak travel season, with several major events happening such as the Australian Open. These months make up the summer season in Melbourne, with temperatures averaging 57.2°F (14°C) to 77.5°F (25.3°C).

10. HOTELS

A wide variety of hotels and hotel apartments is available in Melbourne for passengers and crew. If you wish to stay somewhere a few minutes away from Melbourne Park, consider Pullman Melbourne on the Park, The Langham, Rendezvous Hotel Melbourne and Grand Hyatt. Wherever you wish to stay, Jetex can make all the necessary arrangements for you.

11. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Aircraft Disinsection

All international aircraft entering Australia are required to be disinsected through aerosolized spraying or residual treatments with insecticides prescribed by the World Health Organization.

The procedure may include crew members spraying aerosol cans within the cabin while travelers are on-board, or treating the aircraft before travelers get on board. Cargo holds also need to be treated.

Jetex can take care of all your flight support needs to Melbourne – from ground handling and flight planning, to refueling and in-flight catering. Contact us through info@jetex.com or +971 4 212 4000.

The much-awaited Super Bowl 2020 is expected to cause a surge in aviation traffic. Plan in advance to avoid issues and delays.

Super Bowl LIV will be hosted by the city of Miami Gardens at the Hard Rock Stadium on February 2nd, 2020. The 54th annual NFL finale is expected to bring in over 150,00 visitors to Miami and its surrounding cities. BA/GA operators should prepare in advance when operating to airports in the area during Super Bowl week due to amplified traffic, possible restrictions and increased security measures.

If you are planning operations to Miami for the Super Bowl, here is what you should know:

1. AIRPORT OPTIONS

The two major airports for general aviation operators will be Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport [OPF, KOPF] and Fort Lauderdale International Airport [FLL, KFLL].

KOPF is ideal for business aviation operators as it is in closest proximity to the venue, situated only six miles (15 minutes) from Hard Rock Stadium. KOPF offers full FBO services, a wide range of aircraft repairs and a U.S. Coast Guard Air & Sea Rescue Station. The airport is open 24hrs; however, Control Tower operates from 0700-2300L and U.S. Customs operates from 0900-0000L (extended hours available upon a three-hour advance request).

KFLL is highly utilized as an international airport of entry and is located 18 miles, or about 20 minutes, from Hard Rock Stadium. This full-service airport operates 24/7, with the U.S. Customs Pre-Clearance availability. The airport offers comprehensive services for private and corporate aircraft and their crew members.

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport [FXE, KFXE] and Miami Executive Airport [TMB, KTMB] are also alternative airports for GA/BA operators.

KFXE is located 22 miles (30 minutes) from Hard Rock Stadium, while KTMB is about 33 miles (40 minutes) away. KFXE features a 24-hour Air Traffic Control Tower and airport security. It serves as a U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) landing rights airport with facility operations from 0800-0000L. KTMB Control Tower hours are from 0700-2300L and staff is on duty 24/7. Also with U.S. Customs landing rights, KTMB operates from 1000-1800L during winter and 1100-1900L during summer.

NOTE:

NOTAMs and Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) will most likely be issued during Super Bowl weekend (January 31st-February 2nd). Follow Jetex on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn for up-to-date notifications.

2. FUEL AND GROUND HANDLING

It is advised that ground handling and fuel requests are secured a minimum of 48 hours prior to arrival. Due to the magnitude of the Super Bowl event and high volume of aircraft, jet fueling delays should be anticipated. Contact Jetex at itp@jetex.com for immediate fuel release requests, as Jetex can provide quick turnaround for requests in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale region. Strategically positioned at KOPF, Jetex’s operations center provides efficient flight coordination for both domestic and international operations.

KOPF is designated as a reliever airport to Miami International Airport and has no landing fees; however, handling, overnight and ramp fees apply. KFLL charges handling fees; KFXE charges ramp and tie-down fees; and KTMB charges handling, hangar, ramp and tie-down fees.

3. LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

Taxis and ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft are available at each of these airports. Local vehicle chauffeuring companies offer elite transportation services that are preferred choices for BA/GA passengers and crew. The Miami Metromover is a free, electrically powered option that loops around the Downtown and Brickell neighborhoods. With local partners, Jetex can arrange and coordinate vehicle services for safe and comfortable transportation to and from the airport and Hard Rock Stadium for the Super Bowl.

NOTE:

Expect transportation traffic congestion during Super Bowl weekend on major roads and highways, such as the Interstate 95 (I-95) and the Florida Turnpike (tolled). If you prefer to drive, please keep in mind that Florida has a hands-free law, making it illegal to hold your phone while driving.

4. PERMITS

Overflight permits may be required depending upon the departure destination of the aircraft. Landing permits and a certificate of airworthiness may also be needed, especially during national event weekends like the Super Bowl. Contact Jetex for permit requests and for the latest information on any changes.

5. PARKING AND SLOTS

Hangar and tie-down parking options are available at KOPF, KFLL and KTMB. KFXE only has tie-down options. Slots are not required for these airports; however, during Super Bowl weekend these options may change and lead times may be modified. Prior Permission Required (PPR) at KOPF for the activation of certain runways when ATC Towers are closed. PPR at KFLL applies only when aircraft wingspans are greater than 118ft.

6. CUSTOMS AND IMMIGRATION

For any entry into the U.S. – even tech stops – U.S. Customs must be notified and cleared. U.S. Customs Pre-Clearance is available at KFLL and KFXE, but not at KOPF and KTMB. Foreign aircraft may require a TSA waiver and eAPIS filing for Customs and Border Protection approval, depending on the nature of the flight and/or size of the aircraft. Visit eAPIS for more information.

All operators to the U.S. must pre-notify CBP at their intended port of entry. As pre-notification procedures differ from port to port, it’s wise to know the particular Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) clearance procedures, at least a week in advance, for your intended arrival location. When looking to arrange CBP clearance in the U.S., it’s always recommended to know in advance what requirements must be met and the lead time requirements. Always keep CBP updated on changes that may affect clearance. Customs clearance and a valid passport are required for crew and passengers. For current visa nationality requirements to the United States, check here.

7. SECURITY

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) enforces tight airport security and utilizes unprecedented security measures throughout the airport. All travelers will be screened and no individual is guaranteed expedited screening. The executive airports are relatively safer than the international ones, so it is important to always remain vigilant, especially as you prepare for TSA security checkpoints. TSA pre-check is available and more information can be found here.

Miami and the surrounding cities are overall safe, especially for tourists; however, it is still strongly advised to exercise precautionary measures and to remain vigilant around tourist landmarks. Pickpocketing can be an issue, especially in downtown areas. Always keep an eye out for suspicious activities wherever you go. Security is expected to be heightened during Super Bowl week, so expect delays at security checkpoints and increased law enforcement visibility in public locations.

8. PEAK SEASON

Peak season for Miami covers the fall/winter months of mid-October to early March, as many tourists from the northern parts of the United States fly down for a holiday. With Miami being the host city for Super Bowl LIV, the region is expected to see more tourists than usual.

9. HOTELS

There are various hotels and resorts within the Miami/Fort Lauderdale region with different prices and ratings. During peak season, hotel rates average about 200-600USD per night. For the Super Bowl, it is recommended to book ASAP as hotel rates will certainly rise and sell out. Some premier hotel options include Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Mandarin Oriental Miami, Four Seasons Hotel Miami, JW Marriott Marquis Miami and The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, Miami.

10. CLIMATE

Weather is a major factor when considering a Super Bowl location due to the main operational and logistical concerns. Miami is well-suited as it has a tropical climate with pleasantly warm winter months. The average temperature ranges from 73°F to 78°F (23°C to 26°C) in January/February, and while there is no real dry season, the least rainy season is during January and February. Operations during the Super Bowl should see minimal rainfall and moderately warm temperatures, as February is not the wettest month of the year in South Florida. Tropical storms and disturbances will also not be an issue as hurricane season runs from June through November.

11. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Foreign nationals are required to receive certain vaccinations, as advised by the USCIS.
  • Pets onboard foreign aircraft must meet CDC requirements to enter the U.S.
  • Operators coming to Miami specifically for Super Bowl LIV are encouraged to arrive ASAP as Super Bowl festivities start as early as January 25th, 2020.

CONCLUSION

Super Bowl is one of the largest events in the United States with over 65,000 attendees and over 100 million television spectators. Operating to the host city during the event can pose some operational challenges; however, with proper planning and coordination, the operation can run smoothly.

Jetex can schedule and organize all fuel, ground handling and flight planning services for you to make sure that you have a safe and efficient operation to Miami during the Super Bowl.
