Singapore Grand Prix

Formula One comes to the Lion City next month, with the return of the Singapore Grand Prix. The 2017 season’s second stop in the far east will see the streets around Marina Bay light up in a dazzling festival of motorsports. Read on to learn more about this popular event.

Formula One’s Original Night Race

The Singapore Grand Prix first featured on the Formula One calendar in 2008, and holds the distinction of being the sport’s first ever night-time race. This inaugural event proved a huge success, and the Marina Bay Street Circuit has been hosting annual F1 championship races ever since.

The venue is also notable as Asia’s first street circuit, with the race taking place through public roads around the Marina Bay area. The five-kilometer route is illuminated by powerful lighting systems, with the city’s famous skyline providing a spectacular backdrop for the action. Now celebrating it’s tenth edition, the Singapore Grand Prix has firmly established itself as one of F1’s most gripping and atmospheric events.

The grandstand seating and luxurious hospitality areas which line the track provide outstanding views of the action, and can accommodate over 80,000 spectators. Marina Bay Street Circuit features a tight and twisty layout, which coupled with high humidity levels and the lack of daylight makes for an extremely challenging race.

Marina Bay Street Circuit winds around Singapore’s scenic waterfront area, where towering skyscrapers provide a stunning backdrop for the race.

Last year saw Nico Rosberg take the chequered flag for Mercedes. Now that the German has retired, his countryman Sebastian Vettel will be looking to add to his four previous victories in Singapore. Currently sitting at the top of the leaderboard in the driver’s championship, Vettel will face stiff competition from Rosberg’s former team mate Lewis Hamilton. The Briton has triumphed at Marina Bay Street Circuit on two occasions (most recently in 2014), and is just 14 points behind Vettel after 11 races. Whoever comes out on top, motorsports fans are guaranteed a thrilling contest as the world’s greatest drivers battle for supremacy over 51 laps.

The Singapore Grand Prix takes place at Marina Bay Street Circuit on September 17. Click here to visit the official Formula One website, where you can catch up with all the latest news on the build up to the race.

An eclectic range of entertainment is laid on throughout the expansive Circuit Park area, with the main headline acts performing to a packed crowd at the Zone 4 Padang Stage. Flying to Singapore

There are two airports catering to General Aviation (GA) in Singapore. These are Singapore Changi Airport (IATA: SIN, ICAO: WSSS) and Seletar Airport (IATA: XSP, ICAO: WSSL). Due to the compact nature of the city, both are within 20km of the race site. WSSS is located around 18km east, whilst WSSL is approximately the same distance away in the north of the city.

Changi Airport is one of the largest aviation hubs in Southeast Asia, and has been ranked as the world’s best airport for five years running in the Skytrax World Airport Awards. WSSS functions as an Airport of Entry (AoE) 24 hours a day, and offers a full range of ground handling services. Prior Permission Required (PPR) is not needed, however airport slots are mandatory, and generally subject to a deviation time of +/- 30 minutes. It is important to stick as closely to the approved slot time as possible to ensure smooth operations. Due to the high volume of commercial traffic at Changi, restrictions are in place for GA operations between 15:00 – 18:00 and 00:00 – 03:00 local time. Private non-revenue flights are limited to a maximum of 48 hours parking, whilst charter operations can remain on the ground for up to three hours only. For longer stays, operators are recommended to reposition to Seletar.

Seletar Airport is a 24-hour AoE, and provides a full spectrum of ground support. PPR and slots are not required, and there are no restrictions on long term parking. For these reasons, WSSL is usually considered the most favorable choice for GA operators. Note that on certain days the runway is closed for maintenance. This takes place every Tuesday and Friday from 00:00 to 02:00 local time.

Visas may be required for passengers and crew traveling to Singapore, depending on the nationalities of those on board. These must be obtained in advance, as there are no visas on arrival.
