Italian Grand Prix

This August, the Italian Grand Prix returns to Monza. Regarded as one of the world’s top circuits, the venue has a long history and a close association with Formula One. Read on to learn more.

One of F1’s Most Prestigious Venues

Constructed in 1922, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza is located just outside the Italian city of Monza, around 20km north of Milan. The circuit was only the third purpose-built motor racing track globally, following on from Brooklands in the UK and Indianapolis in the USA.

Monza has featured on the Formula One calendar every year since its inaugural season in 1950, with the exception of 1980 when the Italian Grand Prix was held at the Autodromo Dino Ferrari near the town of Imola. The circuit has hosted 66 Formula One races to date, more than any other track worldwide.

The Embodiment of F1 Racing

The Italian Grand Prix consistently ranks as one of the best-loved fixtures on the F1 calendar among both drivers and fans. Autodromo Nazionale Monza is officially the sport’s fastest track, with an average speed in excess of 240kmph. The circuit requires a combination of speed and skill, and has seen arguably some of the most thrilling races of all time.

Michael Schumacher, pictured here in 2004, raced into the record books with five victories in the Italian Grand Prix.

The track is 5.793km long, with competitors battling over a total of 53 laps. The circuit incorporates a banked oval design and has less corners than most tracks, creating plenty of opportunities for overtaking. The legendary Michael Schumacher has recorded the most victories in Monza, having won the Italian Grand Prix five times during his illustrious career.

Who Will Take the Chequered Flag?

Last year’s race saw Germany’s Nico Rosberg triumph for Mercedes. Rosberg retired from the sport at the end of the season, and so will not be defending his title this year. Favorites to win next month include Rosberg’s former Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, the current leader in the 2017 driver’s championship.

The Italian Grand Prix takes place at Autodromo Nazionale Monza on Sunday, September 3. You can keep up with all the latest news in the build up to race by visiting the official Formula One website.
