Singapore Grand Prix

Formula One comes to the Lion City next month, with the return of the Singapore Grand Prix. The 2017 season’s second stop in the far east will see the streets around Marina Bay light up in a dazzling festival of motorsports. Read on to learn more about this popular event.

Formula One’s Original Night Race

The Singapore Grand Prix first featured on the Formula One calendar in 2008, and holds the distinction of being the sport’s first ever night-time race. This inaugural event proved a huge success, and the Marina Bay Street Circuit has been hosting annual F1 championship races ever since.

The venue is also notable as Asia’s first street circuit, with the race taking place through public roads around the Marina Bay area. The five-kilometer route is illuminated by powerful lighting systems, with the city’s famous skyline providing a spectacular backdrop for the action. Now celebrating it’s tenth edition, the Singapore Grand Prix has firmly established itself as one of F1’s most gripping and atmospheric events.

The grandstand seating and luxurious hospitality areas which line the track provide outstanding views of the action, and can accommodate over 80,000 spectators. Marina Bay Street Circuit features a tight and twisty layout, which coupled with high humidity levels and the lack of daylight makes for an extremely challenging race.

Singapore Grand Prix

Marina Bay Street Circuit winds around Singapore’s scenic waterfront area, where towering skyscrapers provide a stunning backdrop for the race.

Last year saw Nico Rosberg take the chequered flag for Mercedes. Now that the German has retired, his countryman Sebastian Vettel will be looking to add to his four previous victories in Singapore. Currently sitting at the top of the leaderboard in the driver’s championship, Vettel will face stiff competition from Rosberg’s former team mate Lewis Hamilton. The Briton has triumphed at Marina Bay Street Circuit on two occasions (most recently in 2014), and is just 14 points behind Vettel after 11 races. Whoever comes out on top, motorsports fans are guaranteed a thrilling contest as the world’s greatest drivers battle for supremacy over 51 laps.

The Singapore Grand Prix takes place at Marina Bay Street Circuit on September 17. Click here to visit the official Formula One website, where you can catch up with all the latest news on the build up to the race.

Flying to Singapore

There are two airports catering to General Aviation (GA) in Singapore. These are Singapore Changi Airport (IATA: SIN, ICAO: WSSS) and Seletar Airport (IATA: XSP, ICAO: WSSL). Due to the compact nature of the city, both are within 20km of the race site. WSSS is located around 18km east, whilst WSSL is approximately the same distance away in the north of the city.

Changi Airport is one of the largest aviation hubs in Southeast Asia, and has been ranked as the world’s best airport for five years running in the Skytrax World Airport Awards. WSSS functions as an Airport of Entry (AoE) 24 hours a day, and offers a full range of ground handling services. Prior Permission Required (PPR) is not needed, however airport slots are mandatory, and generally subject to a deviation time of +/- 30 minutes. It is important to stick as closely to the approved slot time as possible to ensure smooth operations. Due to the high volume of commercial traffic at Changi, restrictions are in place for GA operations between 15:00 – 18:00 and 00:00 – 03:00 local time. Private non-revenue flights are limited to a maximum of 48 hours parking, whilst charter operations can remain on the ground for up to three hours only. For longer stays, operators are recommended to reposition to Seletar.

Seletar Airport is a 24-hour AoE, and provides a full spectrum of ground support. PPR and slots are not required, and there are no restrictions on long term parking. For these reasons, WSSL is usually considered the most favorable choice for GA operators. Note that on certain days the runway is closed for maintenance. This takes place every Tuesday and Friday from 00:00 to 02:00 local time.

Visas may be required for passengers and crew traveling to Singapore, depending on the nationalities of those on board. These must be obtained in advance, as there are no visas on arrival. For further information on visa requirements for Singapore, please click here to visit the High Commission of the Republic of Singapore website.

Flying to London

In terms of passenger traffic, London has one of the largest city airport systems in the world. Multiple airports are available which cater to General Aviation (GA). The four most popular are as follows:

TAG London Farnborough Airport (IATA: FAB, ICAO: EGLF) is one of Europe’s main hubs for General Aviation. This award-winning facility is purpose-built to serve the needs of business jets, and has been voted best FBO in the “Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific” category of the Aviation International News (AIN) survey for 11 consecutive years. EGLF serves as an AoE, and operates from 07:00 – 22:00 local time (Monday – Friday) and 08:00 – 20:00 (weekends and bank holidays). PPR (Prior Permission Required) is mandatory, however airport slots are not necessary. Long-term parking is available, in addition to pleasant passenger and crew facilities.

London Stansted Airport (IATA: STN, ICAO: EGSS) is located in Essex, 60km northeast of central London. EGSS is the fourth busiest airport in the UK, and is regarded as one of the most flexible. The airport offers full ground handling services, as well as VIP passenger and crew lounges. Stansted is an Airport of Entry (AoE), with customs and immigration available on-site 24/7. Slot booking is required at EGSS, however Prior Permission Required (PPR) is not necessary. Aircraft parking can be provided on the FBO’s private ramp, and should be confirmed at the earliest opportunity. For those who wish to arrive in style, helicopter transfers can be arranged to the city center (subject to availability).

London Luton Airport (IATA: LTN, ICAO: EGGW) is a major international airport located 3km East of Luton, Bedfordshire, and 55km northwest of the city center. It is the fourth largest airport in London, and was ranked as the fifth busiest airport in the UK during 2016, when it served over 14.6 million passengers. EGGW functions as an AoE, with customs and immigration available 24 hours a day. PPR is not required, however slot booking is mandatory. EGGW offers full ground handling services, together with ample parking space (including long stand parking).

London City Airport (IATA: LCY, ICAO: EGLC) is another major international airport, located in the Royal Docks area (London Borough of Newham). The airport is situated just 13km east of the BFC Show Space. EGLC caters to GA and can be used as an AoE, with customs and immigration on-site. Operating hours are from 06:30 to 22:00 local time Monday to Friday, 06:30 to 12:30 on Saturdays, and 12:30 to 21:45 on Sundays. Slot booking is mandatory, whilst PPR is not required. London City airport is equipped for all ground handling services, and the on-site FBO also offers VIP and crew lounges. Operators should submit their requests for handling arrangements as soon as their flight details have been confirmed. EGLC offers limited parking space, and at a higher cost than EGSS and EGGW.

Landing Permits and Visas
Private operators do not need a landing permit for flying into the UK. Visas may be required for passengers and crew, depending on nationality.

Italian Grand Prix

This August, the Italian Grand Prix returns to Monza. Regarded as one of the world’s top circuits, the venue has a long history and a close association with Formula One. Read on to learn more.

One of F1’s Most Prestigious Venues

Constructed in 1922, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza is located just outside the Italian city of Monza, around 20km north of Milan. The circuit was only the third purpose-built motor racing track globally, following on from Brooklands in the UK and Indianapolis in the USA.

Italian Grand Prix

Monza has featured on the Formula One calendar every year since its inaugural season in 1950, with the exception of 1980 when the Italian Grand Prix was held at the Autodromo Dino Ferrari near the town of Imola. The circuit has hosted 66 Formula One races to date, more than any other track worldwide.

.

The Embodiment of F1 Racing

The Italian Grand Prix consistently ranks as one of the best-loved fixtures on the F1 calendar among both drivers and fans. Autodromo Nazionale Monza is officially the sport’s fastest track, with an average speed in excess of 240kmph. The circuit requires a combination of speed and skill, and has seen arguably some of the most thrilling races of all time.

Italian Grand Prix

Michael Schumacher, pictured here in 2004, raced into the record books with five victories in the Italian Grand Prix.

The track is 5.793km long, with competitors battling over a total of 53 laps. The circuit incorporates a banked oval design and has less corners than most tracks, creating plenty of opportunities for overtaking. The legendary Michael Schumacher has recorded the most victories in Monza, having won the Italian Grand Prix five times during his illustrious career.

Who Will Take the Chequered Flag?

Last year’s race saw Germany’s Nico Rosberg triumph for Mercedes. Rosberg retired from the sport at the end of the season, and so will not be defending his title this year. Favorites to win next month include Rosberg’s former Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, the current leader in the 2017 driver’s championship.

Italian Grand Prix

Formula One fans travel from every corner of the globe to join the festivities at this annual celebration of motorsports.

Regardless of the outcome, motorsports fanatics can anticipate a fantastic race in one of Formula One’s most iconic venues.

The Italian Grand Prix takes place at Autodromo Nazionale Monza on Sunday, September 3. You can keep up with all the latest news in the build up to race by visiting the official Formula One website.

LIML is situated 24km south of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, whereas LIMC is around 60km west. Both are open 24 hours a day.

Orio al Serio International Airport (IATA: BGY, ICAO: LIME), located around 45km east of the Monza circuit, is also an option. However operating hours at LIME are restricted to 08:00 – 20:00 local time.

US Air Traffic Control

With Congress heading for its summer recess, it is now clear that there will be no House floor vote on the 21st Century Aviation Innovation, Reform, and Reauthorization Act (H.R.2997) until September. Here, we take a look at the latest developments in the ongoing debate over US Air Traffic Control (ATC) privatization.

Delay in Passage of the Bill

Despite efforts by Republican Congressman Bill Shuster to have the bill placed on the House calendar before the August break, a packed legislative schedule means that H.R.2997 will not be considered until representatives return in September.

Proponents of the bill argue that changes to the American ATC infrastructure are long overdue. “This is about unleashing American innovation and putting the traveling public ahead of the dysfunction in Washington.” said Shuster, the driving force behind the legislation. Fellow Republican Jeff Denham shares this view. “We’ve needed to modernize our air traffic systems in this country for far too long,” said the California Congressman. “It’s time to embrace new technologies and cut red tape to move American aviation into the future and maintain our competitiveness.”

Mounting Opposition to US Air Traffic Control Privatization

Many within the general aviation community feel this legislation could have a negative impact on their operations. One of the chief concerns is that access to the nation’s airports and airspace may become more restricted. In addition, the proposed changes to fee structures are likely to result in higher running costs for smaller operators, who do not benefit from the same economies of scale as commercial airlines.

Several senior elected officials from both sides of the house have spoken out against ATC privatization. These include five Republican congressmen who sent a letter to US House leaders expressing reservations about the bill (the full text of which can be read here).

Oregon’s Democratic Governor Kate Brown shares their concerns. In a letter to the House Transportation Committee last month, Governor Brown stated “A wholesale divestment and privatization of the air traffic control system without sufficient preparation and understanding of the impacts on general aviation could have significant negative consequences for stakeholders in the National Airspace System.”

The latest addition to the chorus of disapproval is Captain Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who famously performed a heroic emergency landing of a stricken US Airways jet on New York’s Hudson River in 2009. “Most of aviation is not airline flying,” said Sullenberger. “The freedom to fly in the US is something that we need to protect and preserve. So why in the world would we give the keys to the kingdom to the largest airlines? Because they definitely have their own agenda – to lower their costs.”

US ATC PrivatizationCaptain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger has voiced concerns about the proposals contained in the legislation, and how these may affect general aviation.

What Next for the Bill?

The August recess will leave less than a month for the House of Representatives to consider the bill and negotiate a final agreement with the Senate, before the FAA’s legal authority expires at the end of September. “I wanted to pass it now,” explained Congressman Shuster last Thursday. “If we had another week here, I think we’d have it on the floor next week. It’s just one of those things where it takes time for members to engage and understand.”

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) has welcomed this interval, seeing it as an opportunity to further mobilize opposition to the legislation. “The situation is far from settled,” said Ed Bolen, President and CEO of NBAA. “Rather than victory, what we have earned to date is the privilege and opportunity to continue our fight for the future of general aviation.”

Belgian Grand Prix 2017

This August, Formula One roars into the historic town of Spa for the Belgian Grand Prix. Here, we take a look at what fans can expect from the race, and how to get there.

Action-packed History

The Belgian Grand Prix is held at Spa-Francorchamps circuit, one of F1’s most historic tracks. The venue hosted its first Grand Prix way back in 1924, and has remained a popular destination with both drivers and fans ever since.

Start of the 1931 Belgian Grand PrixThis vintage photograph, taken more than 85 years ago, shows the drivers line up at the starting grid for the 1931 Belgian Grand Prix.

The original layout consisted of almost 15 kilometers of narrow public roads, and was notoriously dangerous. Today, the lap length has been reduced to just under seven kilometers. Even so, it remains the season’s longest circuit. Spa-Francorchamps’ combination of long straights and fast corners always makes for an exciting contest, with plenty of opportunities for overtaking.

.

Spa-Francorchamps: One of F1’s Most Challenging Circuits

The Spa-Francorchamps circuit follows the contours of the surrounding hills, and winds its way through the Ardennes forests. This charming natural setting makes it arguably the most beautiful venue on the Formula One calendar.

Spa Francorchamps overviewSurrounded by the lush greenery of the Ardennes forests, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is a favorite with drivers and fans alike.

Drivers have come to expect highly changeable weather conditions in Belgium. Due to the length of the circuit, it can even be dry on one part of the track whilst raining on another.

One corner, Eau Rouge, is well-known for its sharp elevation change, and is among the most technically demanding in all of Formula One.

Only a select few drivers can claim to have mastered a circuit of this difficulty level. These include Britain’s Damon Hill (three times winner) and Brazil’s Ayrton Senna (five times winner). However it is Germany’s legendary Michael Schumacher who holds the record for the most victories, having triumphed in Spa on six occasions.

.

2017: Who Will Race to Victory?

In 2016, Nico Rosberg won the Belgian Grand Prix for Mercedes. The German went on to retire at the peak of his success, winning the 2016 drivers’ championship and finishing first in nine of the season’s 21 Grand Prix events. His teammate Lewis Hamilton finished in third place last season, and is riding high on this year’s leaderboard in second place. Hamilton has already recorded two victories in Spa, as has the current championship front-runner, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettle.

Podium-Grand Prix automobile de Belgique 2016The 2016 Belgian Grand Prix saw Nico Rosberg take first place, followed by Daniel Ricciardo and Lewis Hamilton.

Whoever comes out on top, motorsports fans are guaranteed an enthralling race at one of the world’s most scenic venues.

The Belgian Grand Prix takes place at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit on the 27th August, 2017. For more information and all the latest news on the build-up to the big race, please click here to visit the official website.

Flying to the Belgian Grand Prix

There are two main airport options for those attending the Belgian Grand Prix. These are Liège Airport (IATA: LGG, ICAO: EBLG) and Brussels Airport (IATA: BRU, ICAO: EBBR).

Liège Airport is located around 70km northwest of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. It functions as an Airport of Entry (AoE) and is operational 24/7. Prior Permission Required (PPR) and airport slots are not necessary. Parking, fuel uplifts and in-flight catering are all available at EBLG.

Brussels Airport is approximately 150km northwest from the race venue. It also serves as an AoE, however operations are subject to noise restrictions. No take-offs are permitted from 00:01 – 05:59 local time from Sunday to Monday, and 02:00 – 05:59 on Saturday. PPR is not required for General Aviation movements, however airport slots may be required during peak periods. The deviation time for slots is +/- 15 minutes. The Belgian airport authorities will require a copy of the aircraft’s noise certificate for flights landing at EBBR. Parking, fuel uplifts and in-flight catering are available.

Note that visas may be required for passengers and crew entering Belgium, depending on the nationalities of those on board. For aircraft coming from/going to Schengen agreement countries, customs and immigration clearance is not necessary.

Romania

In the first two parts of our Romania in Focus series, we visited the bustling capital city Bucharest and the spectacularly scenic historic region of Transylvania. In the third and final installment, we take a look at some of the other popular destinations found throughout the country.

The Painted Monasteries of Bucovina

As we saw in Transylvania, many astonishing monasteries can be found throughout Romania, some of which are more than a thousand years old and still stand in perfect condition. The Painted Monasteries of Bucovina, located in the northeast of the country, are among the most picturesque in the entire country.

Regarded as masterpieces of Byzantine art, the monasteries represent a one-of-a-kind architectural site in Europe. Their painted exterior walls are decorated with elaborate frescoes, which date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. These feature portraits of saints and prophets, depictions of the life of Jesus, images of angels and demons, and other religious iconography. More than just decorations, the murals represent entire cycles of religious events.

Moldovita Monastery, Romania

Moldovița Monastery, a Romanian Orthodox monastery situated in the commune of Vatra Moldoviței, Suceava County.

The frescoes were originally created to convey the story of the Bible and lives of important Orthodox saints to villagers through the use of pictures. Their elegant outlines and harmonious colors display outstanding composition and attention to detail, and blend in perfectly with the surrounding landscape. The best-preserved examples can be found in Humor, Moldovita, Patrauti, Probota, Suceava, Sucevita, and Voronet. Seven of these churches have been recognized as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage list since 1993.

Whether your interest lies with religion, history, art or architecture, you will be amazed by the unique construction and decoration (both exterior and interior) of these remarkable edifices.

Europe’s Best-preserved River Delta

For an excursion into a unique natural habitat, head to Romania’s east coast, where you can visit the Danube Delta. The best-preserved river delta in Europe, this extensive network of waterways consists of more than 5,700 km2 of rivers, canals, marshes, tree-fringed lakes and reed islands. The delta is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and contains several protected areas which have been designated as sites of special scientific interest.

A bird-watchers’ paradise, the Danube Delta hosts over 300 species of birds. Indigenous species include cranes, cormorants, eagles, geese, ibises, pelicans, swans and vultures. The area also makes a perfect staging post between the equator and the north pole for millions of migratory birds.

Pelicans on the Danube Delta, Romania

A group of pelicans take flight on the waters of the Danube Delta, a destination which is extremely popular with bird-watchers.

The delta’s innumerable lakes and marshes provide a habitat for around 160 species of freshwater and saltwater fish, some of which are unique to the region. Several rare reptiles can also be sighted in the forest areas which line the shore, including Aesculapian snakes and steppe runner lizards.

You can explore the delta as part of a longer Danube River cruise, or book a boat excursion to a specific area. Most of these depart from the city of Tulcea (around 280km east of Bucharest), which offers many good hotels, restaurants specializing in fish dishes and a fascinating museum dedicated to the history and ecology of the region.

Winter Wonderland

Its rugged mountainous landscape and heavy seasonal snowfall make Romania an ideal destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Some of the most popular ski resorts to visit include Poiana Brasov, Sinaia and Paltinis.

Poiana Brașov is considered the best ski resort in Romania, offering seven different ski slopes with varying degrees of difficulty. The resort is situated at an altitude of 1,020 meters, and surrounded by four impressive mountains; Postăvaru, Piatra Craiului, Bucegi and Piatra Mare. Over 50 hotels, villas and guest houses are available for visitors, who are sure to appreciate the spectacular sweeping vistas.

Ski Resorts, Romania

Ski Resorts in Romania such as Poiana Brasov are among the most affordable in the world.

Sinaia is the place to go to experience the best high altitude skiing in Romania. Located in Prahova county, the resort’s slopes are situated around 2km above sea level. There are 20km of slopes and 5km of cross-country ski routes available, catering to both skiers and snowboarders of all abilities.

Travel to the northern area of Romania, known as Maramures, and you will find the captivating resort of Cavnic. Situated at the foot of the scenic Gutai Mountains, the resort features more than 8km of slopes. Whilst these may be lower in terms of altitude, the shaded mountainsides make skiing possible even during higher temperatures. Visiting during the summer months? Cavnic resort is home to Romania’s first artificial ski slope, so you can enjoy winter sports all year round.

Sun, Sand and Sea

Following the snow and ice of the ski slopes, our tour of Romania concludes in a warmer environment. If you prefer to relax on the beach, Mamaia is just the place for you.

The largest and best-known resort on the Romanian Riviera, Mamaia is famous for its vibrant nightlife and busy hotel strip. The resort is attached to Constanta city, and separates Lake Siutghiol from the Black Sea. Its spectacular fountains, promenade areas, luxurious restaurants and trendy clubs become a magnet for holidaymakers during the hot summer months.

Mamaia Beach, Romania

Mamaia Beach is a popular spot for tourists during summer.

The best time to visit is between mid-June and early September, when average temperatures range between  25°C and 30°C (77°F and 86°F). The water remains pleasantly warm up until mid-autumn.

A wide variety of accommodations are available, ranging from simple bed and breakfasts and holiday homes to exclusive 5-star hotels and private villas. If you prefer an outdoor experience, several campsites are  available in the north.

The Mamaia strip comes alive after dark, where you can enjoy a host of packed nightclubs and impromptu beach parties. This bustling resort guarantees a fun-filled break on the charming Black Sea coastline.
