Eight Types of Private Jets: Which One Is for You?

Privacy, time savings and unparalleled comfort are just some of the perks of flying via a private jet.
Cozy sleeping areas, contemporary showers, lavishly appointed board rooms, and plush seats with an abundance of legroom – these are the additional features you can enjoy depending on the private aircraft you are using.

Whether you are planning to buy your own business jet, or you wish to charter one, it is best to know which type will suit your needs and preferences to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable travel, every time.

1. Very Light Jets

Very Light Jet HondaJet Elite

HondaJet Elite

The smallest type of private jet, Very Light Jets (VLJs) are cost-effective to operate and maintain in contrast with standard light jets. These are ideal for short-haul distances or up to a maximum of three hours of flight time.

Also known as Compact Light Jets, these can use shorter runways and fly into areas that are often inaccessible to commercial airlines. These jets typically accommodate four to seven passengers and carry a reasonable amount of luggage, but they have no room for a cabin attendant.

Popular types of VLJs include Embraer Phenom 100, Eclipse 500 and HondaJet HA-420.

Offering better passenger capacity, small light jets can comfortably seat up to eight people, making it widely popular among business travelers. These jets also have a higher average flight distance, ranging from 1,400 to 2,500 nautical miles with a maximum speed of 500 miles per hour. These capabilities make them ideal for two- to three-hour flights, even for intracontinental routes.

Like their smaller counterparts, small light jets can access small airports and runways, giving business travelers more flexibility and freedom to use less busier airports instead of crowded commercial airports.

Although most small light jets do not have room for a cabin attendant, they can be outfitted with a lavatory, unlike most VLJs. Hawker 400 XP, Cessna Citation CJ2 and Dassault Falcon 10 are some of the popular jets in this class.

Super light jets offer enhanced size, range and comfort compared with the small light jet class. With a more spacious cabin and luggage compartment, super light jets can accommodate an average of eight passengers in guaranteed comfort.

Though larger in size, super light jets can easily navigate short runways at private airstrips and small airports, so travelers who want to avoid the crowds at major airports can have alternative options for departure and arrival.

Notable aircraft in the super light jet class include Gulfstream G100, which can up seat up to nine people, and Embraer Phenom 300, which can carry a maximum of 11 passengers.

Mid-size private jets are the optimum choice for travelers who require longer flight capacity. With an average range of 2,200 nautical miles – or around five hours of non-stop travel – mid-size jets can easily manage short-haul and long-haul flights, ensuring transcontinental capacity.

Because it comes with a bigger cabin, it is ideal for passengers who want more headroom, full standing capacity and additional space for luggage. Mid-size jets also offer more stylish interiors and can provide utmost comfort and convenience for five to 10 passengers.

Mid-size jets generally have enough room for two pilots, a flight attendant, a service galley and an on-board lavatory, while some can even be outfitted with an enclosed shower and fold-out divans. Equipped with Wi-Fi and phone capabilities, mid-size jets are perfect for those who prefer to stay connected and productive during flights.

Mid-size private jets can still use smaller airports and are more cost-efficient to operate in comparison with heavy jets. If you are eyeing a mid-size private jet for your next travel, take a look at Gulfstream 150, Cessna Citation Latitude and Learjet 60.

Larger cabin space and greater flying capacity are the upgrades that super mid-size cabin jets hold over standard mid-size private jets. The super mid-size cabin jet class can fly up to seven hours, covering an average of 3,500 miles.

Super mid-size jets feature spacious standing and walking room and have ample space for an enclosed lavatory and service galley. Featuring enhanced avionics that enable a quieter operation, super mid-size jets provide a higher level of comfort for travelers while delivering greater speed and range.

Boasting significantly larger cabin sizes, heavy jets envelop 10 passengers or more in a high level of aviation comfort and elegance, with all the privacy and exclusivity available in private travel.

Standard heavy jets can easily accommodate two flight attendants to manage full in-flight catering, while still having more than enough space for entertainment facilities, enclosed bathrooms and dedicated sleeping areas. In-flight productivity is guaranteed with convenient Wi-Fi and phone capabilities.

These king-size private jets pack in power too, with a superior flying capacity of up to nine hours non-stop and a range of 4,000 miles. Bombardier Challenger 605, Gulfstream 450 and Dassault Falcon 900 are a few top-of-the-line models in this class.

The crème de le crème of private air travel, executive liners, or bizliners, are commercial aircraft modified for business travel or private use. Featuring a high level of customization, these are the most expensive private jets in the market.

From opulent and bespoke interiors, to spacious private suites, en-suite shower and on-board cocktail lounge, this aircraft class takes elite travel on a whole new level. Even with all these exclusive amenities, bizliners offer plenty of space for dining areas, conference rooms, overhead storage compartments, walk-in cupboards and full-service galleys manned by flight attendants.

EBACE 2023 | European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition

EBACE 2023

Business leaders, manufacturers, government officials and business aviation professionals will soon gather at Geneva’s Palexpo for European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) on 23-25 May 2023. For all private aviation professionals, it’s the perfect event to learn about the latest advances in private aviation.
EBACE 2023 is a leading event focused on shaping the future of on-demand aviation. The event provides a platform for discussions on sustainability efforts and ideas that are driving the industry towards carbon neutrality by 2050. Attendees can engage with companies leading the way in future flight, explore cutting-edge technologies and innovations, and connect with clients and talent. The event also features presentations from industry experts discussing the big ideas that will shape the future of the industry.

Visit Jetex at EBACE

Jetex has been a major part of EBACE for many years and we invite you to be the first to discover our latest news and announcements at the event.

EBACE Location and Venue

Palexpo is Geneva’s biggest exhibition and convention center, conveniently located adjacent to both Geneva International Airport and the city’s rail station. The venue is also easily accessible by motorway from the rest of Switzerland, as well as from France, Germany, and Italy. On-site parking is available for 2,800 vehicles.

EBACE2023 Program Schedule

As well as the many exhibits and static aircraft displays, attendees can join a variety of Keynote speeches, panelist discussions and networking events throughout the event. You can find out more about the program and timings at the schedule here.

Flying to Geneva

Geneva Airport (IATA: GVA, ICAO: LSGG) is the main international airport serving Geneva. LSGG functions as an Airport of Entry (AoE) and offers a full range of General Aviation (GA) support services and ground handling equipment for business aircraft. The airport operates from 04:00 – 00:00 local time, seven days a week. Take offs and landings of non-commercial flights are allowed at Geneva Airport between 06:00 and 22:00. The airport is usually busy throughout the day. As there is only one runway, delays can sometimes occur due to inclement weather. However, this should not be an issue during the month of May, when conditions are generally favourable.

During EBACE, some of the parking areas normally used by general aviation will be restricted due to the static aircraft display. As a result, overnight parking may be limited during the event period.

Alternative Airports

Alternate airports which can be used for repositioning include Lyon–Saint Exupéry Airport (IATA: LYS, ICAO: LFLL)Zürich Airport (IATA: ZRH, ICAO: LSZH) and Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (IATA: MLH, ICAO: LFSB). All function as AoEs and offer a full complement of GA support services. However, due to their relatively long distances from the EBACE venue (140km, 280km, and 255km respectively), Geneva Airport remains the best available option. In order to guarantee your spot, it is recommended to ensure that all permits, slots, and permissions are arranged well in advance.

Landing permits for Switzerland

Swiss landing permits are mandatory only for charter (non-scheduled commercial) flights. Private non-revenue flights do not require landing permits. Documents which need to be submitted with the permit application include the plane’s airworthiness and registration certificates, air operator certificate (AOC), and insurance details. The official lead time is five working days, although permits are usually processed within two or three days.

Airport Slots & PPR

Slots are issued in 19-minute blocks, with all timings strictly enforced. Once the request has been approved, a confirmation number will be provided which should be entered in the remarks section of the flight plan. Prior Permission Required (PPR) is not usually required at LSGG, however, due to heavy traffic must be obtained during the EBACE period and other business conventions.

Fuel Uplift

VAT is applied on fuel sales in Switzerland. Enroll in our VAT exemption program today and experience the benefits of VAT-free fuel service. For further details, please contact vat@jetex.com.

Customs & Immigration

Customs and immigration are cleared within the general aviation terminal at LSGG and is usually a fast and straightforward process. Passports of passengers and crew must have a remaining validity of at least six months. Visas may be required, depending on nationality. There are no visas on arrival in Switzerland, so they must be arranged prior to departure.

Hotels in Geneva charge premium rates with stricter cancellation policies during EBACE, with four-star accommodation starting from CHF 300 per night. Contact Jetex travel to discuss your EBACE hotel requirements.

Arrange Your Trip with Jetex

Our dedicated operations team is available 24/7 to look after all the technical details of your journey, allowing you to relax and focus on the purpose of your Geneva visit.

The first-ever race winner was the famous Cigar, a US-trained horse ridden by jockey Jerry Bailey. Last year’s race was won by Country Grammer under Frankie Dettori for American trainer Bob Baffert. After winning the Dubai World Cup four times, Italian jockey Dettori now joins Bailey as joint winningmost jockey of the race.

Experience The Spirit Of Ramadan In The UAE

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a significant and special time for Muslims around the world, and it begins on March 23, 2023. During this holy month of fasting and spiritual reflection, Muslims in the UAE abstain from food and drink during daylight hours as a way to focus on their faith and practice self-discipline.

The philanthropic activity plays a significant role in the Ramadan spirit and fosters a sense of solidity and support within the community. Many individuals and organizations help those in need by donating food and financial aid, as well as by giving them resources and services. The community also comes together in the evenings to break their fasts and participate in prayers.

The exquisite architecture of UAE mosques, particularly the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, is widely recognized, making it a must-visit destination during Ramadan. This sacred place offers visitors the opportunity to experience serenity and peace, witness evening prayers, and hear the call to prayer.

It is essential to follow local customs and traditions during Ramadan out of respect for the local community. This includes dressing modestly, refraining from public displays of affection, and avoiding eating, drinking, or smoking in public areas during daylight hours. It’s also crucial to be mindful of the increased religious devotion during this month and not to disturb those who are fasting by playing loud music or making loud noises.

During Ramadan, the daily routine changes, with shorter working hours for businesses and government offices and some restaurants and cafes being closed during the day. However, most restaurants and cafes remain open, and there are various Iftar (breaking fast) buffets to try the traditional Ramadan meal.

With Jetex Concierge, you can make the most of your visit during this special month and experience the traditions, customs, and culture of the UAE.
