Marseille - Spain

Marseille is the second largest city in France, with a population of 1.6 million.  Founded by Greek traders more than 2,600 years ago, the city has flourished to become the biggest Mediterranean port, and main economic hub for the region.

Marseille is one of the most visited cities in France. Its stunning beaches and rich history attracted 4.1 million visitors in 2012. With over 300 days of sunshine, Marseille is also the warmest city in France. Although the climate is pleasant all year round, the months of June and July are considered the best time to visit.

As the oldest city in France, Marseille has a wealth of museums, galleries and ancient structures. The most important museums include Musée des Docks Romains, Musée du Vieux Marseille, Musée Grobet-Labadié, 19th century Palais Longchamp, Château Borély and the MuCEM. Iconic landmarks within central Marseille include the Old Port or Vieux-Port, La Vieille Charité, Cathedral of Sainte-Marie-Majeure, 17th century Hôtel de Ville (city hall) and the 12th century Parish Church of Saint-Laurent. The Abbey of Saint-Victor is one of the oldest places of Christian worship in Europe.

Victors can also enjoy many beaches at Prado, Pointe Rouge, Les Goudes, Callelongue, and Le Prophète.  The 19th century Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, Unité d’Habitation, Docks de Marseille, prison of Château d’If, and the Calanques are just a few popular attractions that can be explored outside of central Marseille.
