Rome, Italy

Ciao! With a population of almost 3 million people, Rome, the capital of Italy, is the largest and most populated city in the country.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t expect to cover it in one. Take your time, take in the masterpieces the city has to offer and remember, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Mingle with the locals, stray from the tourist areas, indulge in the activities and delicacies the city has to offer and get a feel of the true Roman experience.

Almost like one large outdoor museum, Rome is a classic lovechild of history and architecture. It’s also foolproof for picturesque endeavors with pompously majestic structures creating scenic backdrops for every photo. One of the most famous works of the artist, Michelangelo can be appreciated at the Sistine chapel in the Vatican where his glorious ceiling work attracts visitors from all over the world. Visit the Colusseum, one of the most distinguished buildings of the Roman Empire and the Fontana di Trevi, arguably the most beautiful fountain in the entire city.

Across the Tiber River from the historic center of Rome lies the world’s largest church, Saint Peter's Basilica which was built in over a one hundred year span. The church is in the Vatican City, the world’s smallest country, which is encircled by the city of Rome.

Stand in the reigns of the palatial Pantheon with its clearly Roman, cylindrical structure. The Pantheon is the monument that holds the greatest number of records including the best preserved. Right in front of the Pantheon you can see the lovely piazza della Rotonda.

Museums, parks, galleries and cafes for people watching and delicious coffee make up a city full of culture, history, talent, cuisine and haute couture. If shopping is what floats your boat then you won’t be disappointed in the country that is home to the biggest names in the fashion industry. Acquire a taste for authentic Italian cuisine – pizza, pasta, lasagna and all things Italian are aplenty in the city’s many cafes.

Wander off from the tourist routes into the many cobblestoned lanes that lead to even more magical sites. Keep an eye out for sculptures and paintings high on the exterior walls of buildings and look through the little lanes to find courtyards, gardens, fountains, sculptures, artists and little shops. Breathtaking views of the entirety of Rome can be seen from the Janiculum hill, Pincio at the Borghese Gardens and from the top of the Vittoriano.

If you have an extra day or two, take a train out to some of the beautiful towns and cities nearby, including Pompeii which is just a 3 hour train ride away.
