Kiev, Ukraine

Located in the north central part of the country on the Dnieper River is the largest city in Ukraine, the bustling scenic city of Kiev that is home to almost 3 million people. This picturesque capital of Ukraine is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe.

The art and architecture that originate from Kiev are world treasures. Dating back to the 11th century are the frescos and extraordinary mosaic structures in the Cathedral of St. Sophia, where the princes of Kiev were crowned in the years of Kiev's grandeur. For centuries, Kiev has been known as one of Europe’s greenest city with its spectacular botanical gardens and monumental parks. The Central Botanical Garden founded in 1936 contains over 13,000 kinds of trees, shrubs, flowers and other plants from around the world.

Today, Kiev is the soul of the Ukraine and it is the industrial, scientific, educational and cultural center of Eastern Europe and it has become home to many high-tech industries, institutions and world famous landmarks.

Theatergoers are spoilt for choice in Kiev with the renovated Kiev Opera House presenting ballets, breath taking opera shows and beautiful performances that are usually in Ukrainian or Russian. The innovative ideas of artists from Kiev can be admired at the Kiev Young Theater and for those interested in comedy and musicals the Ivan Franko Theater will be sure to be a hit.

Over 12 million visitors to this historical city have visited and been amazed by the National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War (of 1941-1945). The museum offers indoor and outdoor displays of old military history and equipment and is one of the oldest museums in Ukraine. It is centered on the famous Motherland statue which has become the most recognized landmark in Kiev.

Cherished by Ukrainians is the ornamental church of St. Andrew that overlooks the old section of Kiev. An extravagant structure, the Golden Gate stand close to the center of town and close by stands the awe-inspiring St. Volodymyr, a cathedral that dates back to the 19th century. Not too far from the center of town is The Percherska Lavra that is renowned for its bell tower, astonishing museum collections and ancient cathedrals on its grounds. Another beautiful place is Andriyivskyy Street which is one of the best historic streets and major tourist attractions in Kiev.

On the right bank of the Dnieper River lie remaining parts of the old city. Vulytsya Volodymyrska is the main street of the old city.

Authentic Ukrainian cuisine can be found throughout the city. Stuffed dumplings (Varenyky), small pastries and traditional soup (Borscht) made a wonderful meal. Breads and wheat products are very important to the cuisine, with elaborate decorations on top for special occasions. Traditional potato pancakes (Deruny) are also a must try on a trip to the city.

The peak of summer draws a great mass of people to the city. With highs of over 25°C, outdoor activities are enjoyed throughout Kiev. A large outdoor party is thrown on Khreschatyk Street and Independence Square at night and thousands of people enjoy their time in nearby restaurants, bars and coffee shops.
